Our main project at the moment is fundraising for the building of Flashback Academy in Los Angeles.
Homelessness has no place in America, especially when it comes to two of the most vulnerable groups, former foster care youth and veterans. After "aging out" of the system at age 18, research has shown that previous foster youth still face difficult instability in their lives. As much as 30 percent of previous foster children are diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. Only about 50 percent graduate from high school and less than 10 percent graduate from college. A study focused on foster care alumni in Los Angeles County showed that about 65 percent leave foster care without a place to live and 25 percent are incarcerated by age 20.
There are around 40,000 homeless veterans in the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. More than 11,000 of them live in California.
Flashback Academy will provide a 500 bed transitional housing facility that will serve as a safe haven for two years. Our goal is to assist our veterans and young adults in their development of becoming productive men and women.
Our collaborative accreditation through Alexandera Academy provides academic education designed to assist those in need of a high school diploma. Students will also learn a marketable skill in order to compete in today's competitive business world.
Students will find our classes challenging yet very exciting because our training is centered around the arts. We all know that there are many job that go into the production of a theatrical performance. Our students will not only live at the Academy but will also gain valuable hands on work experience while getting paid.
Visit our site and learn more about the academy and all the exciting and challenging opportunities that will be offered to our students.
